Why have you included Mouth Gym in your app?
We are very well aware of the ASHA stance on non-speech exercises. There was a moment when we threw them out of our app in order to focus only on speech exercises, but we then put them back in due to popular demand. In November 2017 we had a booth at the ASHA Convention itself, and many therapists came up to us, telling us how happy they are that we decided to keep them in.
Every now and then we still receive a question like this, but there’s approximately 10-times more emails from SLPs who are grateful that we created that part of our app. Some have even asked us to make this part of our app bigger :)
But, ever since we introduced PRO BLUBS (a way for you to personalize your student’s Speech Blubs app with your own custom activities, videos, pictures, pdf), we are no longer planning on doing this.
Usually, SLPs explain that they know ASHA’s stance on the matter, but in their career, they have seen so many patients that have benefited from such exercises that they simply have to go with their gut feeling and use them.
Many therapists also explain that they don’t use them as motor exercises, but simply because they’re fun and funny and because kids love that part of our app. They use these activities simply as treats, to motivate a child and increase their motivation and ability to imitate other people.
