JJ Sound - How to use Speech Blubs to learn the JJ [dʒ] Consonant

Sometimes children struggle with making the JJ sound, which develops around the age of 5, as an initial, medial or final sound. The JJ consonant sounds take the same mouth position as the CH consonant sound.  CH is unvoiced, meaning only air passes through the mouth, and JJ is voiced, meaning, uh, uh, jj, you’re making a sound with the vocal cords.

Many parents and SLPs reach out to us and download our app to acquire practice. We will give you a better idea of how to make this sound by watching this video, which shows the tongue position in illustrations and how to properly pronounce the JJ sound. Below the video, you will find a list of words to practice using our app.

If you don't have the app, you can download the app from the App Store (https://apple.co/2UJcddR) or Google Play (https://bit.ly/2QyYTKX).

To practice making the JJ consonant here is the list of sections and words in them that you can practice with your child:

  • Wild Animals: Giraffe.

  • Outdoor Wonders: Bridge.
  • Yummy Time: Vegetable.
  • When I grow up: Lumberjack.
